James Ponsoldt was born in 1978 in Athens, Georgia, USA as James Adam Ponsoldt.

He graduated from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut with a Bachelor's Degree and earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree in directing from Columbia University in New York City. Son of Susan E. Ponsoldt and James F. Ponsoldt of Athens, Georgia; Son-in-law of Peggy A. Charnock of Warrenton, Virginia and James D. Holloway of Whiteford, Maryland.

He has been married to Megan Holloway since September 25, 2010.
